Tracklist :

01 – On And on
02 – Supervulkan
03 – Barnabas
04 – Miami Jesus
05 – Count To Infinity, Twice
06 – Animal 3k
07 – The Trees Are In Misery
08 – Hunter

German Postrockers Milhaven, nobody can deny it, are part of the intimate circle of artists that are closely related to 12rec. We published their first two albums, but now we are happy to pass the flame. Albeit, we keep on hand to the torch - their new album, entitled "Milhaven", recorded at the infamous BluBox studios by Guido Lucas, is on purchase in a high-quality book sleeve via Valeot Records. At the same time, we are happy to announce that it is available for FREE DOWNLOAD from the 12rec. servers. Hell yeah. This is how Milhaven say thanks to everybody who supported the fab four with their former music.

"Milhaven" is simply the best, Milhaven not only recorded but wrote up to now. Their songs are epic and kinescope, still they never get out of hand or loose the melodic focus. This is classical Postrock, slightly experimental but eventually nothing else than sophisticated Pop music. Sure Milhaven might sound like Explosions in the Sky or Do Make Say Think every once a while. However, what makes them strong and unique is songwriting and integrity.

Milhaven do not flirt with Gothic, Metal or razzmatazz alike, their sound remains that of delay and volume but not distortion, the chamber musical minimum of two guitars, bass and battery. Tracks like "Supervulkan", "Barnabas", "Animal 3K" or the intense, textural "The Trees are in Misery" are songs that will stick in your head, that take you on an aural trip and will enrich your life. What else can music offer?

Italian minimalist, modernist, classical pianist Ludovico Einaudi has a new record out. And to my sheer joy, he has once again teamed up with German ambient electronic artist Robert Lippok (and his brother and To Rococo Rot bandmate, Ronald) to produce a whole new selection of instrumental loveliness.

The ‘band’s’ name is Whitetree, and the record is Soundcloud. I can’t really enlighten you on this record - if you are a fan of Einaudi or Lippok, or (more importantly) both, you will love this. Einaudi’s fairly signature piano lines pierce the darkness of the Lippoks’ electronic lulling and reverberating beats. Occasionally Ronald L provides some live drums which add a pounding, energetic rhythm to proceedings, but mostly it is Robert L’s sublime, delicate electronics that conjure up an almost tangible atmosphere to sink into.

Fans of Einaudi’s predominantly classical work who have been alienated by his previous forays into postmodern electronic music will probably want to avoid much of this record, but it may still be worth a listen as some tracks are more piano-led than others.

Even though it came out a week ago, I’ve got to say I’m really enjoying it. I may be a Lippok/Einaudi fanboy (I really am) but it just ticks pretty much every box for me. Wonderful stuff. They are playing together at a festival later this year but I really hope they play some headline shows too. I think it’d be fantastic live.

07 - turn
08 - depending on you
09 - further than the end of the world
10 - buried in pieces

Collapse Under The Empire is an instrumental/post-rock band from Hamburg/Germany. They formed 2007 and released their debut album „Systembreakdown“ (2009) on their own.

Most of the songs are alternating between electro-bleeps and powerful guitar explosions; it’s both disturbing and seductive. As with Collapse Under The Empire’s debut EP „Paintball“ they’ve succeeded their specific post rock sound, combining epic guitars with chilled electronic elements and a portion melancholic mood.

In one year’s time they have self-released their debut LP “Systembreakdown”, It displays acute instrumental sensibility, using pianos and synths with guitar-battering crescendos. “Systembreakdown” may only be about 40 minutes long with no nine-minute epic, but it packs a lot of beauty and emotion.

Collapse Under The Empire start their newest album systembreakdown with a little electronic feel. Synth-pads cause the obligatory, melancholic mood, whereon the song flows into a mellow bridge-part, until it appears for the first time on this CD: the notorious “wall of sound”. A post-rock phenomenon, which has attracted all possible adjectives - from outstanding to horrible. Well, on systembreakdown? The words melodic and tangible might apply the most here. Those are drawn through, from the first to the last second.

On the heels of Octobers Ferndorf album, Dusseldorf-based pianist / composer Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) kicks of the new year with a beautiful extended EP of previously
unreleased material, all of which was recorded during the Ferndorf sessions. Featuring seven new tracks (five on the vinyl edition), the EP is a great follow-up to an album which has continued to draw widespread critical acclaim.

Where previous albums comprised mostly solo recordings of Hauschkas prepared piano (with a few electronic and instrumental overdubs), Ferndorf was a far more expansive and fully-realised album, with many of the tracks also featuring a string duo, enabling an increased solidity and an
expanded, rousing dynamism. Still retaining the shivers and tics (as by-products of) of the modified internal workings of the piano - alongside some sweet electronic touches - these are less central and instead whats foregrounded is the melodic / rhythmic push and pull, and a development towards more orchestrated music and notated compositions.

Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist / composer Volker Bertelmanns work as Hauschka is largely based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the prepared piano - an adventurous intervention into the preconceived idea of the piano as a pure-toned, perfected instrument simply waiting for a gifted virtuoso to play on it. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm.

Bohren & der Club of Gore is a band founded in 1988 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany by Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Robin Rodenberg and Reiner Henseleit. Originally, members of Bohren started out playing in various hardcore bands such as 7 Inch Boots and Chronical Diarrhoea. In 1992 they produced a crossover of jazz, hardcore, and ambient, which they self described as an “unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds”. Henseleit left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Christoph Clöser in 1997, replacing the guitar with a saxophone at the same time.

#1 in The Silent Ballet top 50 Releases of 2008
Something about Bohren & Der Club of Gore’s music makes me feel like I’m going quietly mad. Yet on Dolores, faint glimmers of light begin to pierce the isolating haze. Not that the boys from Berlin have gotten all chipper on us, but from the medieval organs on "Staub," to the introspective sax solos on "Still Am Tresin," to the almost triumphant ending of "Welten," barely-there hints of positivity cause one to wonder if all that gloom is really so bad. If Bohren’s previous output evoked hitting bottom on skid row, Dolores suggests that the hung-over bum wakes up and realizes he can still salvage his life—or at least that even a wrecked life has moments of stunning beauty. The bigger part of the songs and spheres are played live with instruments, supported by Eva Paul who brings her beautiful voice into a few songs. These fragments - with little help of some fx - merge to an extraordinary overall view, whose appeal lies in an own form of slowness and in a reduced perception on small things of everydays life.
