If you are looking for a description of A New Silent Corporation’s sound, and are familiar with the works of Maybeshewill, then you need investigate no farther than that. Though this band is from Italy, rather than the United Kingdom, and is putting out their first album now, rather than in 2006, the differences seem to stop there. Both play a similar brand of 65daysofstatic-influenced neo-post-rock, where electronics live side-by-side with standard guitars/bass/drums and spoken-word clips of people decrying the status quo. If you count yourself among Maybeshewill’s fans (and the band certainly has a fair amount), then you should probably run out and grab Everything is Exactly as it Seems right away; the album sounds nearly exactly like where Maybeshewill might have gone after last year’s Not For Want of Trying (as opposed, that is, to where they did go). And if you aren’t among the Leicester-based band’s fans, then there’s probably not much that will win you over here.

For the rest of you, those who are unfamiliar with Maybeshewill, A New Silent Corporation presents a debut post-rock album with just enough pizzazz to inspire interest, but not enough to maintain it. If there is little to overtly criticize, it would seem that there is also little to explicitly praise. The track lengths are appropriate, the instrumentation is well done, and the samples, though perhaps adding rather little of substance to the music, at least do not intrude annoyingly upon our listening experience. Moments of excitement exist, and the opening track “Time Discipline” was rightly recommended as a TSB Track of the Week a few weeks back. Opening with record scratches set against developing guitar arpeggios before breaking off around the two-minute mark to move into a more standard post-rock style build-up, the track is nothing we haven’t heard before, but it shows a very nice development of technique.

At the risk of sounding excessively snarky, Everything is Exactly as it Seems is perhaps the most honestly-titled album I’ve come across in quite some time. The album carries itself with almost no pretension, and makes no claims for being more than what it appears at the surface. If A New Silent Corporation (which, incidentally, is a great band name) wishes to leave a more lasting mark upon the instrumental rock community, then they will need to develop their own personal approach to the genre. As it is, we’re left with a solid neo-post-rock debut, but one which could easily be mistaken for outtakes from another already established band (which, in turn, has been accused of being no more than a collection of 65daysofstatic outtakes). In a way, the album is like a reproduction painting of Starry Night which one might hang on the wall: nice technique, zero personality. Is this album bad? Certainly not. But is it any good? Well, I suppose so; but I can do no more than that.

[me]Damn, this is good. It's reminding me a bit of 65dos. But not as heavy nor fast.

ARCTIC PLATEAU - this is the nom de plume of Gianluca Divirgilio, an Italian musician with an incredible sense for epic arrangements and song structures whose first recordings offer timeless music between the poles of Post Rock, Shoegaze, New Wave and Indie.

“I am so inspired by the sadness that I feel I have found the joy.” These are the first lyrics you’ll hear on “On A Sad Sunny Day”, the debut album by ARCTIC PLATEAU, and this sentiment is the golden thread that runs through each of the eleven tracks. This album enchants you with an open, dream-like atmosphere and is characterized by a fascinating ambivalence of hope and melancholy, euphoria and sadness. It’s like an introspective trip into your inner self and into your own past, a rekindling of memories and sealed-up emotions. The artist himself describes his compositions as ‘explicitly dreamed music’, and it’s hard to think of any better term for the music of this one-man project.

French Teen Idol is an instrumental solo-project run by the Roman artist Andrea Di Carlo, offering layers of strings and piano melodies, pseudo-glitch drum beats, wanna-be post-rock crescendos and weird vocal samples.

Lovers of Sigur Rós, M83, God Is An Astronaut and The Album Leaf may appreciate FTI's musical proposal.

On May 29, 2005, "French Teen Idol"'s self-titled debut album has been released by the Canadian netlabel Nishi, soon becoming the catalogue's most downloaded release. On October 2005, the song Shouting can have different meanings has appeared on Losing Today's compilation (Italian version).

"Enlightened False Consciousness", French Teen Idol's second full length album, has been released on April 5, 2007 by the post-rock netlabel Lost Children. On September 7, 2007, a limited cd edition (500 copies) of Enlightened False Consciousness has been released.

June 1st, 2009 is the release date of "El Siete Es La Luz", the third album by Andrea Di Carlo. Slightly more guitar-oriented, the 8 songs confirm FTI's proposal and invite you to a unique musical journey.

Violin and cello brings you to the ocean of nostalgia and melancholia, lovely guitar melodies are the dolphins swimming with you; but it doesn’t mean that you may face chaotic storms with guitars and drums gone crazy. It is En Plein Air from Rome, Italy we are talking about. Their music can find a place in the genre of post-rock but when you listen to them, you realize how their classical and jazz influences affect their music. Their live performances both in their country and abroad are said to be pleasing. A magazine calls watching them live “smells like the wood of the ancient instruments projected into the future”.

One more interesting detail: They are the first group in Europe to play live for virtual pub of the game 2nd Life.

Il Cielo Di Bagdad’s instrumental music can simply be described as moody instrumental chords-loops minimalist rock, like a collection of “outros-rock” and last goodbyes-instrumentals, with chord by chord buildings on electric bass and guitars, and other instruments like simple melodies on piano and glockenspiel, some feedbacks effects and environmental background talks, and ambient drones, wounded together with nice cushen close harmonies, and building up to heavier hazes with additional drums, oscillating electric guitars and background keyboards.

Italian minimalist, modernist, classical pianist Ludovico Einaudi has a new record out. And to my sheer joy, he has once again teamed up with German ambient electronic artist Robert Lippok (and his brother and To Rococo Rot bandmate, Ronald) to produce a whole new selection of instrumental loveliness.

The ‘band’s’ name is Whitetree, and the record is Soundcloud. I can’t really enlighten you on this record - if you are a fan of Einaudi or Lippok, or (more importantly) both, you will love this. Einaudi’s fairly signature piano lines pierce the darkness of the Lippoks’ electronic lulling and reverberating beats. Occasionally Ronald L provides some live drums which add a pounding, energetic rhythm to proceedings, but mostly it is Robert L’s sublime, delicate electronics that conjure up an almost tangible atmosphere to sink into.

Fans of Einaudi’s predominantly classical work who have been alienated by his previous forays into postmodern electronic music will probably want to avoid much of this record, but it may still be worth a listen as some tracks are more piano-led than others.

Even though it came out a week ago, I’ve got to say I’m really enjoying it. I may be a Lippok/Einaudi fanboy (I really am) but it just ticks pretty much every box for me. Wonderful stuff. They are playing together at a festival later this year but I really hope they play some headline shows too. I think it’d be fantastic live.

Port-Royale :
port-royal (rigorously written with SMALL LETTERS and with the “-” between “port” and “royal”!) - born in summer 2000 in Genoa, Italy - is composed of 5 genoese guys:

Attilio Bruzzone: guitar, synthesizer, programming (founder)
Ettore di Roberto: piano, synthesizer, programming (founder)
Emilio Pozzolini: sampler, programming
giulio corona: bass, programming
Sieva Diamantakos: visuals, video

They play a dreamy, heady, melancholic, wide music on the border among electronica, ambient, shoegaze with some dance elements even if they are AFRAID TO DANCE! The music is mixed with the sensual images and shots of Diamantakos.
The band is now looking for a new label after that RESONANT RECORDINGS - their home for more than 3 years - has closed up.

Absent Without Leave :
is the solo project of the 26 year-old George Mastrokostas, based in Athens, Greece. Recording everything himself in his home-studio, he creates a melancholic sound that covers a multitude of styles such as electronica, post-rock, shoegaze and ambient.

[me]Well... for me.. the Absent Without Leave's part is more interesting. Beautiful!

Apparently mining his own aural Sutton Hoo, Giuseppe Ielasi is an Italian experimental guitarist and electronic botherer, who pulls all sorts of musical styles from the trench labelled ‘Gesine’. Coming across as partially improvised, ‘Gesine’ is Ielasi’s first solo work since 2003’s ‘Plan’s, and is again witness to a veritable cornucopia of finds. Ranging from shuffling Bert Jansch folk and diet-drone, through to glitch plagued bass and waterlogged guitars, ‘Gesine’ is superficially sepulchral, but penetrate the surface and it’s an eclectic oasis of melodious rectitude.

Aix is the latest work from Giuseppe Ielasi and the follow-up to 2007’s August (12k, 12k1044). WIth Aix we see Ielasi building his layered, atmospheric music around rhythmic grids. Most of the time these are quite irregular and the pulses are not neccessarily stable or clear. Where his previous work approached sound in a linear fashion Aix imposes a strong vertical development with the aforementioned grid and a production consisting of ons and offs, employing as much improvisation as Ielasi’s previous work, but in a different way.

Despite the self-imposed grid structure, Aix relies heavily on randomization. Not in the traditional sense of sound placement but instead of the spatialization of sounds, echoes, reverbs and the stereo image. As a result, Aix has an amazing sense and clarity of space as the small fragments of sound breathe and find their own place in the mix, thanks to Ielasi’s sublime skills as a mixer and engineer.

Ielasi relied heavily on numerous short samples and combining them in ways that fell into his groove; some found from others' recordings and many more recorded during the past year. We hear fragments of percussive (acoustic) objects, drums, piano, trumpet, guitar, and, of course, synthetic textures. Although there is a distinct rhythmic pulse to Aix, Ielasi manages to mold it into something wonderfully languid and warm... and strangely inviting.
