Tracklist :

1. A Sky Full of Clouds
2. Between Joy
3. Your Wings Make You Fly
4. Awake and Sleeping
5. Suddenly Something Good
6. Nattvardsgästerna
7. Swept
8. Plattenbauten: Palast
9. Zvenya
10. Line of Flight
11. Of All the Things
12. I Still Hope

Winterlight combine shoegaze, ambient and electronic influences to make melodic ‘post-pop’ instrumentals.

Growing up in the Thames Valley in the UK, Tim Ingham stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Slowdive at local gigs but his own musical endeavours didn't get off the ground until he found he could use a laptop late at night once his family had retired for the night to create his own electronic version of the kind of warm, hazy sounds that he had gravitated to since his youth.

Joined live by additional member Jamie, guitars and keyboards melt together in a haze of delay, distortion and reverb soaked melodies which have been described as “…like Air playing krautrock”.

"Hope Dies Last" is the debut album from Tim Ingham's sun-kissed instrumental project Winterlight. Including new and previously unreleased material, the album also features a few reworked tracks from a limited edition album by Ingham's now absorbed Lightsway moniker, originally released in mid 2008 by Distant Noise. These older songs have been rebooted and recoupled with the new under the Winterlight name for his splashdown on the emotionally driven n5MD imprint . On several of "Hope Dies Last" songs Ingham has enlisted a few of his friends to provide some new angles to the music. A revamped "A Sky Full Of Clouds" sees Becca Riedtmann providing an ever expansive vocal delivery while Mike Cadoo (aka Bitcrush) supports with some bass and drum programing. In addition, on one of the album's most hopeful tracks, "Between Joy", Aidan Love, whose previous credits include Maps and Goldfrapp, provides a bit of his mixing desk skills. Ingham's brand of electronically shadowed shoegaze lays somewhere between the chime-y ethereal pop of Ulrich Schnauss and wide screen ambient of label-mates port-royal all done with some of the best delay and reverb adorned guitar work since Slowdive's shoegazer classic "Souvlaki". A great debut from an artist to watch.

06. Up And The Sky
07. Lost Souls (feat. radical face)
08. Keep Drifting My Heart

Miaou were formed in 1999 by Tatsuki Hamasaki and sisters Mayumi and Hiromi Hasegawa. Throughout the years the band have blurred the line between pop and experimental, adopting ambient synth swells, drones and IDM glitch to craft a dreamy vision of instrumental rock.

Since the release of their debut album, ‘Happiness’ , in 2003, the band continued making new songs and touring though Japan with Art of Fighting, Epic45 and Tracer AMC. Armed with an ever increasing mountain of synths, toy instruments and a fender rhodes, the band released a second album, ‘Make These Things Alright’ , and their ‘painted’ e.p., further blurring the lines between post-rock and electronica.

After their third album, ‘All Around Us’ , came out in 2008, the band toured across Japan, into Taiwan playing the Formoz festival, as well as doing shows in Ireland and the UK. In between recording the band have contributed to Compilations in Japan and the USA, and completed remixes for the likes of Sweden’ s EF and Not Squares from the UK.

Recorded in Tokyo in the Spring of 2011, The Day Will Come Before Long sees miaou push on into more electronic territory than before – bigger synths, broken up samples and glitchy guitars. Mixed by electronic extraordinaire Cornel Wilczek (Qua) in Australia and featuring some achingly beautiful vocals from special guest singers in Ben Cooper (Electric President/Radical Face/Ghost) and Ben Holton (Epic45). Expect to hear swelling synths, crashing guitars and electronic beats making up miaou’s sonic soundscapes.

Based in Tokyo, FJORDNE is the solo project of Fujimoto Shunichiro. Focused on two concepts, “sound texture” and “twisted time”, he utilises an array of acoustic instruments and transforms his sounds into a new time span using the laptop computer. Within a year in 2008, FJORDNE released 3 albums ”UNMOVING” (u-cover, Belgium), “The Last 3 Days of Time” (Dynamophone Records, USA) and “Stories apart from the world” (Ryoondo Tea, Japan), This was followed by another EP “light passes on through a layer” (SEM label, France) before his fourth album “The Setting Sun” (Kitchen. Label) was released in August 2009.

Following 2009’s critically acclaimed ‘The Setting Sun”, FJORDNE releases his second album on Kitchen. Label entitled “Charles Rendition”. The lyricism of that earlier album and stories of tragedy and social decline are intact, but further explored. “Charles Rendition” is an introspective piano study through a child’s eyes set in a self-penned short story, inspired by Charles Dickens’ 1861 novel “Great Expectations” – a morality tale of a forest boy and girl struggling to accept and adjust to the decadence of society in a mysterious, timeless era. “Charles Rendition” takes its cues from the antique patina of time, with traces of a lingering past that continue to intrude onto the present.

“Charles Rendition” is available on CD and digital formats on 15th July 2011. The physical CD copy comes in a customized 7-inch LP-sized paper edition, professionally offset printed and made with a careful selection of materials and processes – Letter-pressed and individually numbered 300gsm premium matt cardboard folio; and loose newsprint broadsheet fold-outs that include FJORDNE’s self-penned short story accompanied with visual reflections and ambiguities. Limited to an edition of 700 copies only.

The Organ Hearts is the 3rd full-length album by Arms and Sleepers, following up on the recently released mini-album Nostalgia For The Absolute and the first single, Tusk (featuring a remix by Helios). Written and recorded throughout 2010 and early 2011, The Organ Hearts finds Max Lewis and Mirza Ramic collaborating once again with Ben Shepard (of Uzi & Ari) and Philip Jamieson (of Caspian).

Unlike Matador, the band's sophomore effort, the new record features significantly less guitar and focuses more on electronics and drum-heavy compositions. Pulsing beats and driving synths replace the lush glockenspiels and melodicas of the previous album, while concise song structures and haunting melodies remain. Like Matador, the new record is intense, filled with varying textures and intricate layers, and unafraid to free itself of any genre constraints. The execution feels natural, showcasing the band's musical maturity developed over the past four years, 14 releases, and extensive touring.

The Organ Hearts is divided into three sections, much like the band's debut full-length album, Black Paris 86. Each part acts as a soundtrack for the ever changing daily and seasonal frames of mind, a cinematic reflection of our complex feelings and delicate emotions. In the end, the journey through the record embodies the opposing forces of our actual lives: excitement vs. anguish, clarity vs. confusion, satisfaction vs. longing. Acting collectively through the three sections, these 12 individual compositions paint an arresting picture encapsulating our life's variation and unbearable tenderness, but also evoking a sense of hopefulness that might be waiting around the corner. Nothing is certain, but not everything is lost. The album's poetic subtitle, then, seems to be quite appropriate: The Things That Make Me Feel Weak And Strange Get Engineered Away.

09. Ghosts I Have Known [0:02:34.18]
10. Weathering [0:08:40.94]
11. Washed Up [0:08:48.89]

There is a long tradition of pastoral music capturing a quintessential Englishness, running from Vaughan Williams through the English folk tradition to more recent names like Robert Wyatt and Talk Talk. Further down this line you'll find Epic45.

Ten years after their formation in a small rural Midlands village, a decade in which the nucleus of Ben Holton and Rob Glover have redefined and refined the band's sound, Epic45 release “Weathering”, their new album and definitive statement. Epic45's last full length album “May Your Heart Be The Map” in 2007 was described as “the best English summer album ever” by Word Magazine, and was
later included in their albums of the decade. “Weathering” takes the same elements, but is a more mature, reflective and subdued work with a far broader sonic palette.

The album mourns the loss of a way of life that Ben and Rob's generation were the last to witness. Over the last twenty or thirty years, many English villages have become subsumed by the growth of neighbouring towns and cities and their identity has been lost. It was the intention to convey a sense of the ravaging effects of time on places, objects and lives, and to reflect these ideas of change and decay through the textures and lyrical themes.

“Weathering” boasts an impressive set of guest singers and musicians. Stephen Jones of Babybird lends his trademark falsetto to the beautiful “With Our Backs to the City”, a track co-written with Jones after he contacted the band, impressed by a cover of his song “Losing My Hair” that Epic45 had been performing live. The track is unquestionably one of the album's highlights. Rose Berlin, the daughter of Curve's Dean Garcia, adds her delicate vocals to “Summer Message”, a duet she wrote and performs with Ben. Meanwhile, regular contributor Antony Harding of July Skies, sings and plays clarinet on the Durutti Column-esque “Ghosts I Have Known”. Instrumental contributions come from a wide cast including Richard Adams of The Declining Winter and Hood, who adds guitar and hammered dulcimer, electronic duo The Remote Viewer, EL Heath and Brave Timbers/Declining Winter violinist Sarah Kemp.

Maybeshewill – Critical Distance EP (2011) (AWESOME !!!)

Genre : Post-rock, Experimental, Electronica

Tracklist :

1. Critical Distance (04:17)
2. I’m In Awe, Amadeus! (Acoustic Version) (03:49)
3. Critical Distance (Dark Dark Horse Remix) (04:05)

Recent trends have displayed a rise in instrumental bands; with genres such as ‘shoegaze’ or post-rock increasing dramatically in popularity. Though often impressive musically, it’s hard to find a collection of musicians with a well defined personality. This is where Maybeshewill break away from the crowd. Their combination of subtly blended electronic textures and well formed musical phrases put them leagues above the stale, repetitive formulas followed by many instrumental rock outfits.

With a new album due April/May time, ‘Critical Distance’ has been sent forth to tantalise the musical taste buds of those awaiting its release. The title track contains many of the traits that have earned the band much of their acclaim; blending atmosphere and musicality with equal measure, to create an epic soundscape bursting with memorable hooks and climactic choruses.

Following this enticing taste of things to come, the single concludes with a dramatically alternative re-imagining of ‘I’m in Awe, Amadeus!’. Favouring melodious acoustic guitars over the riotous rhythmic components of the original, the track presents itself as an altogether different beast; demonstrating the band’s ability to transcend genre yet still remain true to their own sound.

The single is due for release on March 7th through Function Records (Shield Your Eyes, Cats and Cats and Cats).

ARMS AND SLEEPERS is the American duo Max Lewis and Mirza Ramic, with frequent guest appearances by Ben Shepard of Uzi & Ari. The band was formed in 2006 and has since released 12 albums and EPs, in addition to several tours of North America, Europe, and the UK.

"Nostalgia For The Absolute" is Arms and Sleepers' 12th official release, and the 1st of 2011. Deliberately planned for the transitional period between winter and spring, this short album evokes not only the romanticism and darkness of the unforgiving cold season, but also the excitement and hope of the nascent warm season. Written and recorded over a course of two years, "Nostalgia For The Absolute" finds the band further exploring their modern-classical and ambient leanings, both an homage to and an expansion on their previous effort of similar nature, Cinematique. Wordless, concise and melancholy, this is a release that has focus but is not afraid to breathe—a perfect soundtrack for the sleepless, the contemplative and the nostalgic.

"Nostalgia For The Absolute" is the first in a series of albums and EPs to be released by Arms and Sleepers in 2011, and acts as an introductory piece to the 3rd official full-length, out in May also via Expect Candy.

12. In the Air: III 4:01

Ambient electronic vet Tim Hecker releases his new highly anticipated album Ravedeath, 1972 on February 14 via Kranky.

If there’s one thing that characterizes Tim Hecker’s music, it’s a spirit of dichotomy, sitting comfortably betwixt smooth, rounded ambient edges and jagged points of noise. Ravedeath, 1972 continues that dichotomy, and embodies another one, combining the effervescent caprice of live improvisation with the cool consideration subsequently brought to bear on it in the studio.

It’s impossible to listen to this album without finding oneself drawn into the cover imagery and the titles Hecker has bestowed on the tracks. The album’s cover—portraying an upright piano, poised to be thrown from a roof—is simultaneously violent and playful, and here at the album’s heart, Hecker draws on words evoking strong, violent notions: “hatred”, “paralysis”, “suicide”. It has to be said, though, that these notions confine themselves to the conceptual aspect of the album (spoken of in the press release, which doesn’t so much prove illuminating as actually come across like a red herring – another example of violence and playfulness combined?). “Analog Paralysis, 1978” is, if anything, less paralytic than either earlier track “No Drums”—which seems to strive at being transfixed, but falls just a little short of that—or indeed “Studio Suicide, 1980” which follows, and is precisely the kind of track I spoke of before, where one’s inclined to drift (but not nod) off.

While not without its flaws, Ravedeath, 1972 is Tim Hecker’s strongest, most consistent album to date. Admittedly, for some it will be a challenging listen—lacking the quietude heard on Harmony in Ultraviolet and with more intensity and ambition than An Imaginary Country—but, at its best, the rewards for rising to that challenge are nothing less than mind-blowing. – Review by Simon Cummings for Fluid Radio

Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Kranky, Alien8, Mille Plateaux, Room40, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat. His works have been described as “structured ambient”, “tectonic color plates” and “cathedral electronic music”. More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive. The New York Times has described his work as “foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole”. His Harmony in Ultraviolet received critical acclaim, including being recognized by Pitchfork as a top recording of 2006. Radio Amor was also recognized as a key recording of 2003 by Wire magazine. His work has also included commissions for contemporary dance, sound-art installations, minimal techo works under the name 'Jetone', as well as various writings. Tim has presented his work in a live setting around the world, including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Victoriaville (Quebec), Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver), and Transmediale (Berlin). He currently resides in Montreal.

“Japanese for Beginners” is Near The Parenthesis’ 4th album via the n5MD imprint and 5th overall. Not far behind on the contemplative artfulness of 2010′s “Music For the Forest Concourse” this new album finds Tim Arndt adding more texturally experimental treatments to his signature mix of melodic IDM and Modern Classical. Arndt was intent on creating a decidedly more “electronic” backdrop for the record, which includes what may be some of the most creative drum programing of his career. Building on this new platform, Japanese for Beginners continues Arndt’s bias and skill in constructing haunting piano motifs and, as always, brings the pieces together seamlessly. The songs on “Japanese For Beginners” are as hopeful, as dreamy, and as thoughtfully crafted as you want them to be. With this album as with any of Arndt’s releases, it is up to the listener to dive in to the details or simply let it play as the soundtrack to your day.

Yasushi Yoshida (吉田靖) was born in November 1978 in Osaka, Japan. He writes, produces and performs music focusing on piano and guitar arrangements. Yoshida began making his name as a composer, contributing to multi-award winning dance companies, BABY-Q’s solo dance performances and various plays and films in Japan.

Not content with working solely within the music scene, Yasushi Yoshida has also contributed material to areas as diverse as theatre and visual arts. Collaborations include Yoko Higashino’s solo dance performance and Oi-SCALE theatre company’s “Michigaere Sekai”.

Two and a half years from his previous album, “Little Grace”, a breathtakingly beautiful shower of instrumental music with ringing sounds of live instruments performed with film-like eloquence, Yasushi Yoshida will release his newest album, “Grateful Goodbye” from noble label.

Yasushi Yoshida’s music style like a storybook that breathes life into the images of the scene in the listener’s mind has led the way to many collaborations in the area of visual arts including dance, theater, and film. In his third album, “Grateful Goodbye”, each of the tracks have been composed around the concept, “stories of farewell.” A story unfolds in every song, coming together like a puzzle to form one grand story in the end. “Farewells” are captured from different angles and the flowing, three dimensional execution of the stories speak well of the artist’s talent as a story teller.

In orchestration, the style of the previous album has evolved further and now features a vast lineup of live instruments such as guitar, bass, flute, and trumpet composed around the piano, cello, and violin. Approaches like chamber music, dynamic orchestra ensembles, and their emotional melody are not only inspiring but the level of completion and the superior power of expression together prove the sure evolution of Yoshida’s music. Though tranquil and melancholy in mood, the album brings to mind positive images of dynamism and life. It is not a film score. It is not classical music. It is not post-rock. It is pure and beautiful music at its best. A “Grateful Goodbye” to all those living. A masterpiece by Yasushi Yoshida.

The Apparat Organ Quartet is an Icelandic band founded in 1999 by Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hörður Bragason, Músikvatur and Úlfur Eldjárn. AOQ use old discarded technology, home organs and cheap consumer cast-offs often salvaged from garbage dumps and then customized by the band for the rigors of live use. Apparat Organ Quartet is a 5 piece band: 4 organists and 1 drummer. They sometimes describe their music as “Machine Rock and Roll” but the standard definition of their sound is “Organ Quartet Music”, a completely new genre.

Apparat Organ Quartet was originally formed to take part in a series of improvised concerts organized by Kitchen Motors in September of 1999. (Apparat member Jóhann Jóhannsson is a founding member of Kitchen Motors). The idea was to put together an electric organ ensemble, in part inspired by Steve Reich´s pieces for electric organ (e.g. “Four Organs”). The band was in fact initially motivated by a desire to play these early minimalist works in concert. These ideas never came to fruition and instead they started to compose their own pieces, slowly evolving their unique sound through trial and error.

They have been compared to a dizzying range of acts, from Kraftwerk, Wagner and Goblin to Terry Reilly, Steve Reich and the Glitter Band. Apparat Organ Quartet use old discarded technology, home organs and cheap consumer cast-offs often salvaged from garbage dumps and then customized by the band for the rigors of live use. The band’s eponymous debut album, almost three years in the making, featured many strange and beautiful sounds thanks to their vast collection of antique synthesizers, Farfisas, Hammonds, home-organs, cheap portable keyboards and all sorts of malfunctioning machinery.

After eight long years, the five-piece are now finally ready to release a follow up.

“Apparat Organ Quartet has grown into a phenomenal force, playing soul-stirringly portentous mechanical music, equal parts progressive rock and horror film soundtrack, reminiscent of older acts like Kraftwerk and Goblin… as innovative and meticulous as Sigur Rós but who sound nothing like it.” Neil Strauss The New York Times
