Tunturia – Invisible City (2011) (AWESOME !!!)

Tracklist :

01. Kitezh
02. Betrayal
03. Battle
04. Sinking
05. Discovery
06. Reflection

Like the desolate yet majestic plains of the arctic north, Tunturia’s sound is at times both harsh and beautiful combining elements of post-rock, ambient soundscapes and experimental noise.

Formed in late 2005 the band quickly became a vehicle through which its members were able to explore concepts and ideas through music. Intricate without being technical, grand in scope without the pretension, lush without losing intensity, the band forged ahead writing new material that at times teetered between the edges of progressive and hauntingly minimal.

Not ones to rest on the accolades or achievements of the past, Tunturia are more anxious then ever to return to the studio and begin work on their follow-up record, the elaborately conceived and atmospherically complex Invisible City.

“Invisible City,” Tunturia’s equivalent of “Chinese Democracy,” will be available on October 28th through Oxide Tones. The album is a narrative based loosely around the Russian folk tale of the City of Kitezh. But don’t let the pretentious subject matter fool you, the record is an enjoyable musical romp touching on ambient, post rock and instrumental sounds which hopefully, unlike “Chinese Democracy,” won’t be a terribly prolonged and bloated musical disappointment.

After three years of building songs up, then carving them back down to their essentials, My Dad vs Yours has broken the post-rock mould into sparkling gems. Their second full-length album, Little Symphonies, is built around philosophies of pop music by balancing aesthetic and practical landscapes influenced by Phil Spector’s “wall of sound". And they've done it with style, using delicious layers of melody and samples that include analog synths, beat-boxing, local church bells (backed by road construction), family recordings and lush string arrangements. The album is more upbeat than its predecessor, with a pop-inspired intensity varnishing the band's careful instrumentation. This positive energy supports the album's overall message: that the small things matter, and that our everyday battles will ready us for whatever life throws our way.

Ambient electronic vet Tim Hecker releases his new highly anticipated album Ravedeath, 1972 on February 14 via Kranky.

If there’s one thing that characterizes Tim Hecker’s music, it’s a spirit of dichotomy, sitting comfortably betwixt smooth, rounded ambient edges and jagged points of noise. Ravedeath, 1972 continues that dichotomy, and embodies another one, combining the effervescent caprice of live improvisation with the cool consideration subsequently brought to bear on it in the studio.

It’s impossible to listen to this album without finding oneself drawn into the cover imagery and the titles Hecker has bestowed on the tracks. The album’s cover—portraying an upright piano, poised to be thrown from a roof—is simultaneously violent and playful, and here at the album’s heart, Hecker draws on words evoking strong, violent notions: “hatred”, “paralysis”, “suicide”. It has to be said, though, that these notions confine themselves to the conceptual aspect of the album (spoken of in the press release, which doesn’t so much prove illuminating as actually come across like a red herring – another example of violence and playfulness combined?). “Analog Paralysis, 1978” is, if anything, less paralytic than either earlier track “No Drums”—which seems to strive at being transfixed, but falls just a little short of that—or indeed “Studio Suicide, 1980” which follows, and is precisely the kind of track I spoke of before, where one’s inclined to drift (but not nod) off.

While not without its flaws, Ravedeath, 1972 is Tim Hecker’s strongest, most consistent album to date. Admittedly, for some it will be a challenging listen—lacking the quietude heard on Harmony in Ultraviolet and with more intensity and ambition than An Imaginary Country—but, at its best, the rewards for rising to that challenge are nothing less than mind-blowing. – Review by Simon Cummings for Fluid Radio

Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Kranky, Alien8, Mille Plateaux, Room40, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat. His works have been described as “structured ambient”, “tectonic color plates” and “cathedral electronic music”. More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive. The New York Times has described his work as “foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole”. His Harmony in Ultraviolet received critical acclaim, including being recognized by Pitchfork as a top recording of 2006. Radio Amor was also recognized as a key recording of 2003 by Wire magazine. His work has also included commissions for contemporary dance, sound-art installations, minimal techo works under the name 'Jetone', as well as various writings. Tim has presented his work in a live setting around the world, including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Victoriaville (Quebec), Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver), and Transmediale (Berlin). He currently resides in Montreal.

aKido is the electronic rock band of Kim Gaboury. The Montreal-based composer and guitarist began this studio project in 2004. Two EPs have been released to date; ‘PLAYTIME’ and ‘BLINK’, both out on Nordique Records.

With two albums and a handful of remixes, aKido has opened a portal into the world of indie rock and post-electronica. ‘Gamechanger’ is his much anticipated third album, a distinctive statement comprised of skilled simplicity and coherently juxtaposed layers making use of the freedom from any immediate dancefloor demands.

Released through his own Nordique Records, this new album truly demonstrates that there are many more elements at play within aKido’s songs that better lend themselves to the album format. ‘Gamechanger’ feels like a stirring journey, yet each track seems to have its own discreet identity. The harmonic explosion of guitars, the tape-manipulated synthetic sounds, the gorgeous female whispers and the shimmering melodies woven into his songs are given time to develop homogeneously. While groove is a central feature, aKido is at his best when all kinds of elements mesh together; dark atmospheric propulsions, idiosyncratic chord arrangements, tidy time signature switches, twirled leitmotivs and pummelling beats form a surprisingly cohesive whole. aKido indulges his heavier rock inclinations with artfulness and his intricate electronic inflections with effervescence.

‘Gamechanger’ is a deeply enjoyable album with a broad appeal to lovers of original electronic music.

Tracklist :

1. Do
2. Make
3. Say
4. Think

Do Make Say Think is an instrumental group from Toronto, Ontario. The band formed in the 1990s as a recording project for one of the members’ sound engineering classes in college. Their first rehearsals took place in an empty schoolroom where four basic verbs — Do, Make, Say and Think — adorned the walls. The group subsequently adopted the words as a name. Their music combines jazz-style drums with electric bass, synthesizers, electric guitars, wind instruments, and electronic effects.

The sixth full-length from Do Make Say Think defiantly features four long-form tracks, three of which clock in at over 10 minutes, and all of which trace the inimitable musical arcs that have made this band justly celebrated for their unique sonic palette and vibrant distillation of compositional forms and influences into some of the past decade's most consistently rich and rewarding instrumental rock.

09 Acadia Acadia

The six piece instrumental acts from Toronto is back with a new record a collection of songs
inspired by Paul Chaissons book The Island Of Seven Cities and the range of sounds and emotions conveyed are staggering. Led by vibraphone savant and composer Paul Aucoin, the songs on Lle de Sept Villes find strength, cower in shyness, love, hurt, soar freely and sear with intensity, (all without the benefit of a spoken word) but unlike so instrumental acts trying to convey the same emotions, the catchy melodies The Hylozoists craft infuse playfulness and whimsy to lighten the load. Bubbles & Wheezy starts with an airy melody that the band deftly (and patiently) transforms into a dark storm, but understands the weight of the chaos, and quickly ushers in bluer skies to conclude the track (in a concise 4-minutes, avoiding the trap of building and building until the songs length outlasts its impact).

Crafting heavy, dark, gloomy instrumentals or dancey-pants beats is one thing, but for an instrumental record to truly inspire and drive the listener forward is another thing altogether. They certainly build some dark tones (The French Settle In), but even on the dark and brooding Bras dOr Lakes, the eerie violin and vibraphone that haunt the listener at the onset give way as the band infuses life into the notes, transforming the song with a subtle, organic build. Your Band Doesnt Have The Legs I Thought It Would seems like the theme to some sort of animated short that pits a morose hero against the struggles of another lonely morning ( ican almost picture him covering his eyes to block out the sun and budding flowers), only to see him gain motivation and strength with each step, springing forward with giant leaps.

06. Needle In The Hay (Elliott Smith cover)
07. Long Dark Twenties (Kids In The Hall cover)
08. Faith (The Cure cover)

Nadja—a duo from Toronto, Ontario featuring Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff—create what is often described as ’ambient doom.’ Nadja’s music combines elements of metal, shoegaze, ambient, post-rock , experimental, and neo-classical.
Their new album, ’When I See The Sun Always Shines On TV,’ features eights covers of some of Baker and Buckareff’s favorite bands. ”Consider this album an exploration of the roots of Nadja,” says Baker. ”Everyone compares us to My Bloody Valentine, so we had to cover them; Codeine and Swans were both bands exploring the heaviness of metal without actually being metal; The Cure have that lovely, bittersweet gloominess; Elliott Smith's 'Needle in the Hay' is simultaneously so simple and so devestating; no one believed us when we said we covered a song from The Kids in the Hall movie, a staple of our live set, so we had to get that one to tape; how could we resist the opportunity to cover A-ha's heaviest (but oh so catchy) tune? And Slayer is just Slayer. In an effort to illustrate our motivations behind this album, we asked our friend Mathew Smith to create a series of children's-storybook-like drawings to go with each song.”

3. Beyond God & Elvis
4. A Sixth Trumpet
5. An Ounce Of Prevention
6. The First Five
7. Let Them Know It’s Christmastime
8. Hammer & Nails

Musically, OLKF is the most accomplished FMTM effort yet, and this is perhaps why the samples are less frequent than those in past works. With the band facing a new recording process (the guitar, bass, synths, samples, and piano are now added before the drums as a result of drummer Francis Choug's relocation), greater room was left for development and experimentation in the song writing process. The sound on OLKF is bigger, wider and denser, with a greater sense of craft and a maturity in the song writing structure that brings out a larger depth of melody. “(Millions of) Little Factories” hurtles a long at the frantic, heavy pace, “The First Five” has strong electronic and DJ Shadow leanings, while “Hammer & Nails” beings at somber post-rock, moving into math-rock, then ending with a climatic metal ending. The album’s highlight is undoubtedly “Let Them Know It’s Christmastime” (sic) with its infectious funky rhythm built around a sample about the Mexican government’s reaction to peasant farming when under monetary pressure, leading to a sweeping breakdown, before an arpeggio-heavy Minus the Bear ending reaches a melodic, uplifting climax.

On Little Known Frequencies is without doubt one of the best albums you’ll hear in 2009. It encapsulates the sound of an extremely talented group of musicians truly honing their voice, calling on their past experiences to deliver their best music to date. From Monument to Masses' ability to mix a plethora of different styles effortlessly and constantly pushing the boundaries of the instrumental music cements their place as one of the most important bands within the genre. The steady evolution and refinement of their sound, coupled with their provoking political approach, make them impossible to ignore, and if you have until now, today is the time to join their unstoppable movement. by TSB

Sure, lovers of post-rock will find plenty to love and admire here, and the detractors will say it sounds just like all the other bands who practise this art. But in a world that’s becoming increasingly cold, dark and worrisome, I’m going to plug into FMTM and take solace in their epic political symphonies of wonder. by Rich Hughes

Pietro Amato (french horn), Mathieu Charbonneau (keyboards) and Julien Poissant (drums) founded torngat in 2001 with ex-bass player Sylvain Delisle. Sylvain left the group in 2003 shortly after the release of their first full lenght cd (self-titled, 2003). Since then, the trio has released a live cd and most recently, an EP (La Rouge, 2005). Torngat has presented its music in numerous types of venues such as rock clubs across Eastern Canada, popular music festivals (Pop Montréal 2004,2005), new music festivals (Radicaliberté 2003) and as a part of contemporary dance shows (Catherine Lebalnc’s A-miss). Playfully avoiding every possible pigeon hole, Torngat’s compositions and improvisations engage listeners with beautiful melodies, and unexpected surprises.

Described somewhat oxymoronically as an "ambient power trio", Montreal's Torngat return for a second album. In typically angular fashion the opening track is titled 'Interlude', setting you up for a hazy, eerily atmospheric sequence of events. Ghostly keyboard figures take the lead with a distorted organ creaking into life, gathering up momentum for the haunting title track - a piece of music that owes as much to Harmonic 33-style library music pastiche as it does to instrumental prog and post-rock. Throughout the record the sound takes on a warm, muffled and generally rather enigmatic feel that's just the right side of lo-fi, with the comparatively full-blooded closing number 'Going What's What' permitting just enough of the track's lamenting brass melodies to poke through the mix. A beautiful album, and one that doesn't quite sound like anything else.

The London Apartments is Justin A. Langlois.
Beginning as a bedroom recording project in 2003, The London Apartments have since released numerous EPs and singles on netlabels around the world, including Sundays in Spring and Sutemos, a debut album, "Romanticism Aside" on Sound of Pop Records and an E.P., "Logistics & Navigation" on Beggars Banquet.

The music video for Put A Jacket On (directed by Sean Wainsteim) from "Romanticism Aside" was featured on MuchMusic's the Wedge, while the video for Summer Takes All My Time (directed by Danielle Sabelli & J.Anthony Langlois) from "Logistics & Navigation" was added into rotation on MuchMusic, featured on the Indie Spotlight and the Wedge.

The London Apartments have toured across Canada, showcased at NXNE and CMW and played online audio-only shows from various living rooms.

Music for the upcoming new album, "Signals & Cities Are Forever", has been in the works for the better part of a year, slowly being completed, reworked and nurtured.

Langlois is currently entering the MFA program at the University of Windsor, Visual Arts, studying Integrated Media, while working for the environmental art project, Green Corridor. Windsor is still industrial, automotive and a point of terribly aware contrast between its urban core and surrounding countryside. Though certainly not a concept album, "Signals & Cities Are Forever" will frame its sound around this contrast, matching the hardscaped reality of the city with the delicate nature around it. There is much to come.

However, I'm making available the new album, "Signals & Cities Are Forever" available for download as of today. It's 3 days away from my 25th birthday, so consider it a birthday present for me if you find the time to download and listen to it.

Armed with an array of guitar pedals, synth pads and thousands of audio samples Tunturia recorded their debut album in the summer of 2006 in an ambitious studio tour-de-force. The result is Maps, a 10 song album exploring the idea of various world regions traversing the globe both culturally and geographically. As ambitious as this record may seem, it marks only the first phase in the band’s ongoing evolution.

I love this album. It's never bored me!!! You must try it !!!
